My 14-year-old cat has spreading baldness on her back. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 20 lbs

A 14-year-old yard cat has been cared for by us at home and in the yard, including vaccinations, etc., for 14 years. 7 years ago a dog attacked her and bit her in the back and she was temporarily paralyzed and close to death and the tail detached from the body. In recent years, baldness in the back has been spreading. Is there anything to do?

The baldness may not be related to the attack. At that age, I would be concerned about a few things, including metabolic illnesses that can change coat and skin consistency as well as change eating and drinking habits, bowel habits, weight, etc. Other issues include a sort of dermatitis such as a yeast, bacterial or parasitic infection, excessive grooming from stress or illness, or even something that is affecting growth of the hair. Since there are so many potential causes of this issue, it is best to bring Pichu into your vet. They can run some bloodwork to help check for illness or diseases that may need to be treated. In the mean time, keeping her from licking or rubbing the area and protecting it with a T-shirt or Elizabethan (cone) collar may help reduce hair loss until your vet can take a look.
