My cat overgrooms and loses fur. How can I get it to grow back?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 9.3 lbs

My cat Bits is an unbelievable overgroomer. She has most of the fur gone on her lower stomach, back paws and back of the front paws. It all started with little round bald spots of the back of her heels on her back paws. She is perfectly healthy - eating and going to the litter same as always. Even the skin looks healthy, no redness or sores at all. All vet tests are normal (blood, x-ray, ultrasound). Picture shows the difference in 3 years. How can I get the fur to grow back?

Wow - Bits certainly has groomed all of the fur off of her abdomen! The two most common causes of overgrooming in cats include allergies and anxiety/stress. I'm glad to hear that all of her diagnostic tests have been normal, but unfortunately, neither of these issues show up with blood tests or imaging. I would ask your vet if they feel that she would be a good candidate for a medication to help manage some allergies in cats (Atopica) or anti-anxiety medication (Prozac is the most common option). The only way to get her fur to grow back is to treat the underlying issue, although it will still take some time and patience. I hope that everything goes well for Bits!
