My intersex pug puppy: Can surgery ensure a normal, healthy life?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 10 days old | 3 lbs

My family’s new female pug puppy was originally thought to be a female dog, but our vet in NYC told us the puppy seems more likely male, but seems more likely to be intersex / in between. What are our options for our puppy? Can we get the spray/neutering surgery or if testicles need to be removed from abdomen — can the dog live a normal life if no other complications exist?

Yes, this puppy looks intersexed from the photo. Both the ovaries and the testicles will need to be removed from inside the abdomen. There may or may not be a uterus. I suggest you get a very skilled surgeon to do this procedure as it will be difficult. At this stage though, you are at least 4-6 months away from doing surgery. He is way too young to do it now. After the surgery, he should be able to live a normal life. Those breeders should not ever breed his parents again..
