My dog is sleepy and has diarrhea after methocarbamol. Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 15 years old | 10 lbs

My dog was given 50mg of methocarbamol and he took his first this morning at 8am. He cannot function. He is only laying down, sleeping mostly and even has diarrhea in his sleep. Is this normal because I'm worried and it's been 11 hours since he took it.

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. 500mg is a pretty high dose of Methocarbamol for a 10 pound dog. At the very high end of the "normal" dosing range the dose would be 200mg. That being said, luckily the drug is very safe even at high doses. He probably just needs to sleep it off. DO NOT give him any more medication until you speak to your vet. If he starts vomiting or the sleeping lasts more than a total of 24 hours then you need to take him to your vet or to the ER. As always, if you are really worried at this time you should take him to the ER for an exam. You know him best so if you. are worried you should act on that. Here is a link to an article about this medication's use in dogs: ( https://www.petplace.com/article/drug-library/drug-library/library/methocarbamol-robaxin-v-for-dogs-and-cats/ ) Hope this helps. Best wishes.
