Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | neutered | 12 years and 10 months old | 86 lbs
My golden retriever was getting ready to turn 13 yrs. He has been having hip problems lately. I gave him a few pieces of beef tenderloin that we had seasoned with garlic and pepper. He enjoyed the steak but later that night seemed to be panting. He fi ly settled down and went to sleep. When I checked him the next morning he was dead. Did I kill my dog with those few pieces of beef? I feel so.. guilty.

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss of Chase. Loss is never easy - particularly one so sudden. A few pieces of steak will not kill a dog. At its worst, steak can trigger pancreatitis, or some vomiting and diarrhea, but even this usually takes at least a day or so to develop. Sudden, unexpected death preceded by heaving panting is more likely to be due to underlying heart disease, such as dilated cardiomyopathy or some severe arrhythmias, although other underlying disease processes are also possible. You have absolutely nothing to feel guilty about since you did nothing wrong. Again, I'm very sorry for your loss.
