My small dog's vulva is very swollen during heat. Is it a prolapse?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Brussels Griffon | Female | unspayed | 1 year old | 5 lbs

My 1 year old Brussels Griffon is in heat but I feel her vagina is way too large for just being in heat. She’s an inside dog and we have no male dogs. There’s zero chance of her being pregnant. We want to get her spayed but she is so small she’s only 5 lbs so we waited longer than we did with all of our other dogs through the years. Her vagina looks 10 x it’s normal size. I’m not exaggerating. Thank you in advance for your time

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Tootsie. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian. The vulva will swell with heat, but you want to ensure there is not a complicating factor such as a vaginal prolapse starting. I hope this information helps!
