My dog has diarrhea, vomiting, and straining. When to call the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Female | spayed | 2 years and 5 months old | 56 lbs

My dog pooped an excessive amount when I got home from work. Then she alerted me that she had to go again 10minuts later and was shaking so then she had diarrhea and both times she went out she kept squatting like she felt like she wasn't done. Some stuff squirted out also. Possibly from anal gland? Then she vomited mostly bile and I'm concerned because she rarely has these issues. Also when she was straining to go I could see inside her butt looked red and unusual. Should she see a vet?

Aw, poor Girlgirl! Diarrhea with straining can cause a temporary tiny bit of rectal prolapse, which can look a bit red and odd. The good news is that it corrects on its own. If Girlgirl is still acting, eating, and drinking normally, you can try to offer her a bland diet to try to let her upset stomach settle down. This includes boiled white meat chicken or lean ground beef mixed with white rice. At her weight, she would get about 5.5 cups of this 50/50 mixture per day, divided into 3-4 smaller meals. After a few days on the bland diet, gradually mix in her normal food. However, if she is lethargic, refuses to eat or drink, or has ongoing vomiting and/or diarrhea, then yes, she should see a vet for further evaluation. I've included a few articles below for further reading. I hope that she feels better soon! https://www.petcoach.co/article/diarrhea-in-dogs/ https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/vomiting-1/ https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/diarrhea-1/
