My Shih Tzu was neutered. Why is his incision irritated and licked?

Our Shih Tzu was neutered 18 days ago. I noticed him licking at the incision site today and although I cannot see stitches anymore it does look irritated. I cleaned the area with a rag and some dog shampoo and have put a recovery suit on him to prevent further licking. Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 2 years old | 15 lbs

Ouch, that looks like a hot spot may have formed. It sounds like you are already doing everything at home that you can, including keeping the area clean and dry and keeping Rocky from licking at it with an e-collar/shirt. I would continue to monitor the spot and bring him into your vet if the area doesn't look better within 24 hours, or begins to ooze pus, debris, is hot to the touch or swelling more, is painful, or grows in size.
