Why did my 8-week old golden retriever puppy suddenly pass away?

Our 8-week old golden retriever puppy suddenly passed away. I took him out to use the restroom at 2:30 am then played with him for a bit before I put him back in his crate. At 3:30 am he let out a loud whiny yelp and we rushed over to find him unconscious, but still breathing. We tried to get him to wake up by calling his name and rubbing his sternum, but he didn't respond and stopped breathing. We're devastated and trying to figure out what might have caused his sudden passing. Any thoughts?

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your puppy. Unfortunately, the only way to know for sure if to have a necropsy (autopsy preformed). This is strictly a guess, but the most common reason for the sudden death is a heart defect. I recommend to call the breeder and alert them. They may need to do more screening on the parents and keep a record in case it happens to other puppies. Again, I am so sorry for the loss of your sweet puppy. My condolences.
