Dog's eyelid caught on eye suddenly. Should I take him to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 2 years and 6 months old | 63 lbs

What could this be in my dog's eye? Sometimes when he blinks it goes away. It seems like the bottom of his eyelid area is getting caught on his eyeball. It just suddenly happened overnight and seems to be causing slight discomfort. I just am not sure if we should take him to the vet or if there's anything we can do for him.

It is difficult to say for sure with these photos. A closer eye exam would be best to diagnose the problem. A number of things could be going on here including: conjunctivitis (due to some irritant getting in the eye), chemosis (swelling of the eyelid), or any number of eyelid abnormalities. If he is pawing at the eye, any discharge from the eye, or prolonged redness of the sclera (white part of the eye), then its best to get Percy seen by your vet for a closer look and treatment. You can apply a warm compress for 5 minutes on the outside lid for now and then monitor today to see if this progresses and warrants an exam. I hope that Percy's eye resolves soon! Best wishes and take care.
