Is bacon grease safe for dogs? What are the dangers of feeding it?

Pet's info: Dog | German Spitz | Male | neutered | 42 lbs

know it’s unhealthy but I give my dog about half of one teaspoon of bacon grease (lol) on his food maybe 2-3 times a week. He weighs 43 lbs. He is healthy at all of his check ups. On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the worst, how bad is this if you had to chose a number?

7-8. Even half of a teaspoon has the potential to cause pancreatitis. A few years ago, I dropped one small piece of potato on the floor that had been fried in oil, and my dog got ahold of it before I could stop her. She ended up with pancreatitis the next morning from it. Stop giving Reggie the bacon grease.

Bacon is not a very good treat for dogs because it's very greasy and high in fat - this can cause stomach upset or even more serious problems like pancreatitis in some dogs. Some better options for treats would include small pieces of plain chicken or roast beef, or fresh veggies like carrots or green beans.

Ideally, she should be seen at the nearest veterinary ER. The doctors there can 8ndice vomiting via injection. This is most successful when done within 2 hours of ingestion. The bacon may cause stomach upset (vomiting or diarrhea) or, more seriously, it can cause pancreatitis (due to the fat content). Pancreatitis is painful and can be life threatening if not treated promptly. If a vet visit is not possible, withhold food for 24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet in small, frequent amounts. If there is stomach upset, feed bland until symptoms resolve then transition slowly to the regular diet. Symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian include lethargy, persistent vomiting or diarrhea, loss of appetite or abdominal pain.

When out for a walk within the last hour. my 12 month old Beagle found a slice of uncooked bacon. It was on the ground yesterday too, but today, she grabbed it and swallowed it before I could get it out of her mouth. How dangerous is this to her?
A small piece of raw bacon likely won't pose too big a risk. At worst, you may see some minor stomach upset (vomiting and/or diarrhea). Either can typically be managed at home with a short fast followed by a bland diet fed in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. Transition slowly to the regular diet afterwards. Symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian include persistent stomach upset, loss of appetite or abdominal pain.

My 6month old lab puppy female, about 45lbs just ate about 10-15 pieces of bacon, is this okay??
due to the grease in bacon, it does have potential to upset her stomach and cause pancreatitis. This causes vomiting and bloody diarrhea and can be very painful to her abdomen. I would try to feed her a bland diet such as chicken and rice for a few days and monitor for those symptoms. if they are noticed then I would get her seen right away as this often requires hospitalization with IV fluids.

My dog just ate half a package of cooked bacon. Should I be concerned?
Naughty Copper! I'm sure he enjoyed it :) Bacon contains a lot of fat, so I would expect that he may have some mild stomach upset for the next day or so. There is a chance that he could develop a more serious problem called pancreatitis from eating so much bacon - if this happens, you will see symptoms such as repeated episodes of vomiting, lethargy, loss of appetite, and sometimes bloody diarrhea. If any of these signs are seen, then you will need to take him to the vet right away for treatment.

My dog ate a bacon greased filled paper towel. Just one. And he ate his kibble dinner but hasn’t pooped. It’s been 4 hours and he vomited his food up. Just a little bit. He eats his food really fast so this isn’t an uncommon thing for him to do. sho
Hello, thank you for your question about Dexter. Bacon grease is very high in fat and can be irritating to the stomach/GI tract. IF a large amount is eaten it can also lead to pancreatitis. Paper towels are usually digestable depending on the size of the dog and the number ingested. I would recommend continuing to monitor Dexter for any progression or worsening of the vomiting. You could offer Dexter a bland diet to help ease the potential discomfort in his GI tract. If Dexter becomes inappetant, continues to vomit, or develops diarrhea I would recommend having him seen by your veterinarian. They can perform an examination and determine the need for other diagnostics and treatments. Hope this helps, good luck!

When it comes to potentially mixing bacon grease into cat food, giving terriake jerky, or a raw egg to cats which if any or all food/treat items be avoided?
Thank you for using Boop by Petco! I do not recommend giving any of those foods to Theo and Furby. Bacon grease is high in fat and can cause pancreatits, flavored jerkies are typically high in sodium which can cause dehydration or garlic/onion flavors which are toxic to cats and dogs, raw eggs can be contaminated with bacteria and cause diarrhea. If you want to mix something into cat food, there are many canned foods or broths (for cats) available in pet stores that may entice your cats to eat. You don't need to do anything, most chances are that it will not affect him, there is a small chance that it will cause vomiting that will probably resolve on it's own. diarrhea should also be expected in the next 48 hours.

Is pancreatitis curable or life threatening? My friend give 2 slice of salami to his dog since many times and he give fresh salami raw one can that also cause pancreatitis or kidney damage ?
It can be very severe and life threatening, but dogs can survive with intensive veterinary care. Once, I dropped a potato friend in oil (one small bit), and my dog got it before I could pick it up. She got pancreatitis from that little bit, so it's possible that salmi could do it as well. No, it does not cause kidney damage.

There is the potential the pork fat could make Charlie sick, and it could cause him pancreatitis again. I would monitor him and if you do see signs of pancreatitis, take him into a vet immediately. You could take him into a vet now to have vomiting induced to get the fat out so there won't be any problems. Best of luck.
