Why is my cockapoo's second heat delayed? Should I be worried?

Hi i have a cockapoo who is 1 and a half years old. She's had her first season but I havent seen her second season yet. I thought she was a month ago but no sign of any blood. She does seem slightly swollen now so she may be coming into season now. All her sisters have had their second seasons but Willow hasn't. I just wondered why and if it was anything to worry about.

I wouldn't be worried just yet. As you said, Willow's vulva is slightly swollen, so she may be coming into heat soon. It could also be she had a silent second heat. Give it another month or so, and if you don't see a heat after that time, have her seen by a vet.

Hi and thanks for posting on Boop by Petco! Sometimes it can take a few more months for female dogs to come into their first heat. Other times a heat cycle can go unnoticed and is called a silent heat where the typical signs and symptoms of estrus in dogs are not very noticeable if at all. I would wait a few more months to see if she comes into heat. She may just be a late bloomer! Hope this helps- thanks again!

This is definitely possible that she is already back in heat. She could also have an infection so be sure to keep an eye out for any abnormal behavior like not eating, lethargy, or vomiting. If you see any abnormal behavior or just want to be sure, I would have your vet take a look at her to ensure she is healthy. I would not breed her during this heat cycle since she just had a litter. Hello and thank you for contacting Boop by Petco. No, painful swellings of vagina are not normal in heat. Please, take Kelpie to your local vets as she may have vaginal infection or mild vaginal prolapse, which are not uncommon in young dogs during or just after the heat. If it is a mild or partial prolapse, your very will probably recommend neutering to avoid this problem in the next heat.

It sounds like she may be coming in/out of heat. Small dogs don’t always have a significant amount of blood where you can see. Sometimes it is just a few drops here/there. She may also be experiencing a false pregnancy which is where her body thinks she is pregnant but she isn’t. Keep a close eye on her and to be extra cautious don’t let any intact males near her if you don’t want to have accidental puppies. If she starts to be lethargic, refusing to eat, or any additional weird behaviors i would have your vet take a look at her. I hope this helps!

Hi there. It's certainly possible that this could be a "silent" heat, as not all dogs have bleeding from the vulva during their heat cycles. It sounds like she's showing other normal signs of heat, such as vulvar swelling and standing for mating. The only way to know for sure what is going on with her heat cycles would be to see a veterinarian who deals with reproductive issues, for testing such as vaginal cytology, progesterone blood levels, etc. Without this information, it's all just a guess :)

That appeared then hours later blood came out of her vagaina i think she’s on heat but what is that round thing is it normal because of the heat cycle or not plz help
Thank you for submitting your question regarding your dog. Her swollen vulva and the blood tinged discharge are consist with her heat cycle starting. However, the lesion in the pictures is abnormal. She could have traumatized herself by licking. If there is tissue protruding from her vagina, then I worry about a prolapse. If the area enlarges or seems to bother her, then she will need to see her veterinarian. I hope this information helps!

I have a 6month old female shih- tzu she had her cycle mid August 2017...now it's the end of Sept 2017 and her private part is swollen again,should I be concerned? ?
Yes I would be concerned in that a dog's heat occurs every six months, not a month apart. It could be that Bella has an infection causing the swelling of her vulva but it could also be that she is pregnant especially if she was around intact males when she was in heat. I would have her seen by a vet for this. The vet can diagnose what is causing the swelling of her vulva. I hope this helps!

my basset hounds vulva swelled 13 days ago but still no sign of her bleeding for her heat yet she is almost 15 months old.
Vaginal swelling is itself a sign of estrus/heat even without discharge. If it is the first season it may be that you won't notice any discharge at all. It is actually possible that the estrus is over already and vaginal swelling will go down in the next week time. Hello, the heat cycle occurs in several stages and not all dogs will exhibit similar signs. Some dogs will develop vulvar swelling anytime from the onset of bleeding to 1 week after bleeding. Some dogs may not have vulvar swelling or it maybe minimal swelling that it is hard to notice. If you are planning on breeding her, to determine the best time, you may check her progesterone levels with your primary care veterinarian or allow her to stop bleeding before bringing in a male. If you are confident Katie was in heat three weeks ago and there is a large amount of vulvar discharge I’d be concerned that the bleeding might be from a uterine infection or pyometra. If it’s a small amount of discharge it’s possible that she’s having a longer than usual heat cycle. Your vet would be able to determine whether or not she is still in heat with a physical exam and vaginal cytology to look at the cells in the vagina. I’d recommend making an appointment to see your vet if the bleeding continues.
