My dog is in pain and I can't afford a vet. Are OTC meds safe?

My lab is 80 lbs and has hip dysphasia. She can’t get up hardly at all. Is there anything over the counter I can give her for pain. I cannot afford to go to the vet right now.

No, unfortunately not, there are no OTC pain medications for dogs. Many human ones are toxic to dogs, and can be fatal if given. She sounds in a lot of pain if she can't hardly get up. She has to see a vet now. If paying for a vet is an issue, you can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants. Otherwise, I would rest him until he sees a vet. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on a lead only, and bring him right back in when he's done. I would keep him confined to a small room or crate if possible to keep him from moving around too much. Hi. I am so sorry to hear this! I wish there was a safe over the counter pain medication for pets, but there isn't. Human over the counter meds can be toxic to pets so those aren't an option. If he is having trouble resting, you can give him 25mg benadryl ( 1 adult tab). It will not help pain, but may help him rest till tomorrow. If you have a near by ER, I would recommend that.

I would recommend discussing with your veterinarian if there is something you can switch him to that is more cost effective and still approved for use in dogs. You can also check into online pharmacies or box stores (such as Costco) that offer pet medications at a lower price.

Unfortunately no. Many human pain medications are toxic to dogs, and can be fatal if given. I recommend resting her for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take her out to toilet on a leash, and bring her right back in when she's done. If she still appears painful after this time, then I would take her into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. She may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe.

I'm sorry Taz is in pain! He really should see a vet for this problem, as it's not nice to leave him in pain. Unfortunately you cannot give him any OTC pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. The best you can do is rest him. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on a leash, and bring him right back in when he's done. If this does not help, tell your parents you spoke to a vet who strongly urged you to take him into a vet. Best of luck.

They may be expired, but also she is an older dog and she could have a health condition that means taking steroids is not recommended at all. You could accidentally do serious harm. Poor Willow! Unfortunately no, there are no safe effective over-the-counter pain medications for dogs. The best thing to do for her is minimize her activity and keep her quiet until she can get to the vet. If she needs help getting around, you can loop a towel under her tummy to use as a sling and take some of the weight off her legs. I would discourage even giving aspirin, as anything you give may interfere with the medications your vet may start tomorrow. If her pain level is excessive and you feel she can't wait that long, the next best thing would be to take her to the nearest emergency vet. I know it's hard to see our pets in pain! Hope she feels better soon.
