How to tell if my kitten injured her neck on a window blind cord?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 8 lbs

My kitten jumped off a shelf with the window blinds cord under her chin. It wasn’t wrapped all around her neck but it did jolt her head a bit when she jumped. How would I know if it injured her neck or trachea?

If Mille's neck was injured, you would see swelling, trouble lifting her head, pain when moving the neck, and potentially coughing. If you see any concerning signs, have her seen by a vet right away.

That is so scary! Given that she is acting normally, is able to eat, and can talk, I'd just keep an eye on her for now. If you see bruising on her neck, difficulty eating or breathing, or any other concerning signs, take her into a vet immediately.

That does sound very worrisome. Unfortunately an injury to the spine is not something that we can diagnose by hearing the clinical signs. As you know, a back injury can be very serious. I recommend to get mittens in to see the veterinarian quickly. The doctor will be able to palpate the back and should get an idea as to if a back injury is likely. Pets can also get soft tissue muscle pulls, hip pain and a variety of other ailments that are not as serious as a spinal injury. The first step though is to get her checked out. My cat's collar had tightened while we were at work. Her neck has swollen considerably just below the chin. It seems to be a result of the tight collar. Is it possible that it is a muscle strain? Or could it be something more serious?
It could be something more serious, such as damage to the internal anatomy under the collar. Given that her neck has swollen considerably, I would have her seen by a vet right away. She needs a physical exam and x-rays to see if there has been any damage internally from the tightened collar. If there is damage, then the vet can treat her.

I'm sorry to hear about the ordeal you and your kitten have been through. I would check your kitten over for any obvious injuries first, such as severe fractures or obvious bleeding. I would make sure that it is walking properly and does not appear to be having any issues with balance or equilibrium. If none of these seem to be a problem, going to the vet right away might not be necessary. If over the next 24 hours, you start to see any issues that may be attributable to pain or shock, have your kitten checked out by your veterinarian. Lastly, make sure that your dad has no more access to your cat since he clearly doesn't know how to handle one properly. If this means finding it a new home, it may be in its best interest.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Sasha! I recommend having her seen today by your Vet. She could have something stuck in her mouth or under her tongue especially since you know she chewed on the blind or she could have gotten a hold of something else. If the Vet just finds a wound then they can provide pain medications and antibiotics. I wish you the best!

I'm sorry to hear that Jiraiya is having these problems. He needs to evaluated by his veterinarian. He seems to have multiple issues that may or may not be related to the neck injury. He will need a thorough physical exam and then depending on the findings, possibly x-rays +/- bloodwork. Depending on those results a treatment plan can be formulated. Good luck to you and Jiraiya!

This is an emergency. You need to take your kitten to a pet ER right away. Small kittens can die very quickly from injuries but they can also recuperate very quickly if treated properly. It is important to find where the blood comes from and how serious the injury is. The fact that the neck is hurting is especially concerning. Please take your kitten to an emergency veterinarian now.

My Kitten,Luna, was nipped at in the neck by our dog from food aggression. He held her in his mouth for a few seconds then finally she ran away and hid. Now she wont stop sleeping, her eyes are squinted when we wake her up, and she tilts her head.
Poor Luna! The incident may have caused some internal damage to her throat area or inner ear and may cause her to be painful. I recommend having Luna seen by a vet as soon as possible, who will be able to take some x-rays to see if there is any damage and the extent of it. Your vet will also be able to prescribe pain relief medication appropriate for cats if necessary. I hope this helps and that all is well with Luna!

This is definitely a situation where I would suggest taking him to a Vet asap. Many injuries are not visible to us after a "crush injury". Your kitten could have broken bones, internal bleeding, or even swelling in the spinal cord or a break.

My kitten got trapped in the door as I was shutting it and now has a lump on her shoulder
Swelling like this can happen with muscle injury, bruising under the skin, or with fractures. The severity of the injury is generally related to how much she is limping. If she is not using the leg, then I would be worried about a fracture and/or nerve injury. This would require a visit to a veterinarian within 24 hours. If she just has a slight lump, then it's likely just soft tissue swelling. In this case, it would still be best to have a vet evaluate her, but is not as urgent.
