My puppy ate paper/cardboard and has mucus in poop. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 4 months and 16 days old | 15 lbs

My dog (4 mo) has been getting into things like cardboard/paper towels recently, she mostly tears/chews on it but she has what i think is mucus in her poop. I’m a new dog owner and I’m concerned. It’s only happened once and she’s been pretty normal otherwise, what should I do?

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. There does appear to be a mucous coating on this stool. Typically that just means the stool was in the colon for a longer period of time. If this mucous persists for longer than 36 hours AND/OR she is acting sick, then you should take her to your vet of an exam. Be sure she is up to date on deworming. Intestinal parasites can also cause a mucous covering on the stool. If she is otherwise acting normally, you can try giving her a probiotic for a couple weeks to help normalize the bacterial population in her stool. I would recommend Fortiflora. She may end up with a bowel obstruction which could mean she would need surgery and it can be life threatening.
