My dog has discharge & phantom pregnancies but no heat. Is she sick?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labradoodle | Female | unspayed | 3 years old | 80 lbs

My labradoodle/golden doodle mix is 3 years old and has never gone into heat. When she should be going into heat, she has discharge and my male dog won’t leave her alone but she’s never fully gone into heat. She has had a few “fake pregnancies” where she mopes, carries all of her toys around whining and produces a little bit of milk but has never bled. should I be extremely concerned something else is going on or could she just be infertile?

Hello. I am so sorry for your worries with Luna. Some dogs can have rather quiet or silent heats where you do not see the overt vulvar swelling & bloody discharge. If you were my client, I would strongly recommend spaying Luna. She may not be truly infertile, but there does seem to be some hormonal issues with her. For her future health, spaying may be the best option for her. It would be best to discuss this with your veterinarian at your earliest convenience. Thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
