My cat had kidney failure and died. What could have been done?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 5 years and 4 months old | 8.13 lbs

My 5yr old tuxedo was diagnosed with kidney disease in March. He was put on sub Q fluids and was hospitalized and did a IV kidney flush in Sept. He recently started bleeding from the mouth and I was told he needed a blood transfusion because his RBC number was 5%. They told me even if he got the blood transfusion his creatine level was extremely high due to his kidney disease. My boy passed away that night. I wanted to know if there was anything that could have been done to save my fella?

I'm so sorry to hear about Sylvester and your loss. It sounds like you did everything you could for him and he was likely in renal failure. Sometimes this is treatable, other times the kidneys do not recover and cats may need dialysis or even a renal transplant. It sounds like you did everything right by him but his condition was too severe.
