Golden puppy has grade 3 heart murmur. How concerned should I be?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | unneutered | 5 lbs

I’m supposed to be getting a Golden Retriever puppy at the end of January. He’s currently 5 weeks old. The breeder said he was whiny on Wednesday, so she brought him to the vet. They put him in anti inflammatory thinking that the mom may have sat on him. They also discovered a grade 3 heart murmur. How concerned should I be about this? Did the murmur possibly sound worse since the puppy was in some pain?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Finely. The murmur is concerning and should not have been affected by him have been painful. I recommend having him evaluated by a veterinary cardiologist. He should have an echocardiogram prior to you agreeing to purchase him. Some murmurs can be innocent in puppies, meaning that they will eventually grow it. However, most are associated with congenital heart defects. You will want this information prior to buying the puppy so that you can plan for ongoing medical expenses that he may have. I hope this information helps.
