My German Shepherd eats a lot but is underweight. Is it EPI?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 10 months old | 55 lbs

Hi. I have an almost 2 year old intact female GSD, and I'm getting a suspicion that she may have EPI. She eats 4 cups per day, is 26" tall but only weighs 55lbs and won't gain any weight.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. She does look very slim. A test for EPI will be definitely a very good idea as the symptoms are consistent with EPI and this disease usually affects German Shepherd Dogs. You local vets will be able to take a blood sample and send it off for testing towards EPI. Good luck
