My dog has scabs and bald spots. Is it serious or just irritation?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 6 years and 11 months old | 11 lbs

About a month ago my dog had a small dark scab on the side of her neck. It came off, taking a little bit of hair with it, but there was no blood/puss/etc underneath just a mini bald patch of skin. There is now one on her ear and it seems newer as there was blood underneath when i scraped at it gently. She has had dandruff problems before so I assumed it was skin irritation and am trying different shampoo but is it possibly something more serious?

If it's only one scab it is just possible that Cobain scraped her ear on something. I would monitor it for any changes and keep an eye out for any additional new scabs forming, excessive itchiness, redness, or irritation on the ear or body as these would indicate something more ongoing that should be seen by your vet (such as an allergy.) If you're trying a new shampoo out, you can also try it on a foot or leg first, and watch for any signs of irritation before using it on Cobain's entire body. If she does have a reaction to it, a second wash in warm water only can help remove any excess shampoo that may have caused skin irritation.
