My cat licked a plate with onion on it. Should I be worried?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 9 years old | 11 lbs

My cat licked the plate that had potato casserole on it and that casserole contained onions. He didn’t eat the onion. He is a 12-year-old domestic shorthair. What should I do!?

Hi, if he has eaten just the potatoes there should not be any need to be concerned. The amount of onion that can cause toxicity symptoms needs to be over 5 g/kg of weight, so I think you can be reassured that Percy will be fine. From now onwards keep him away from anything containing onions though as even a small amount eaten on repetitive occasions can cause signs of toxicity. Take care and give Percy a cuddle from me !
