Why is my dog's nose blocked on and off with fluid and licking?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 10 years old | 90 lbs

My dog has had this blockage in his nose, on and off for the last 48 hours. Other than the excessive licking (more of a nuisance to him), he’s not bothered by it. It comes and goes, but when cleaned with a tissue, produces a small amount of fluid. I have an appt this Friday, but would love some thoughts?

Poor Cooper! It definitely looks like something may be stuck in his nose causing irritation, or there is a build up of debris from a cold, etc. It's good that you have an appointment, as I would try to get him in ASAP to have the nose looked at and have your vet safely remove the item if there is one in there. Continue to keep the nose as clean and dry as possible, and prevent him from licking as best you can (hard when it's his nose) to help reduce any further irritation. If the area becomes super inflamed, changes rapidly, or is very bothersome to Cooper, I'd see if you can get seen sooner.
