Is it safe for my bird during house painting? How long away?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Conure | Male | 2 years and 7 months old

I am having some places in my house painted. I’m not sure what to do about my Conure. I know birds are extremely sensitive to fumes and that it could potentially kill them. Should I remove my bird completely from my house and have a friend watch him? If so how long should he be out of the house? The painter is going to take about 3 days to completely finish.

Hello. There really is not enough information to totally recommend removing your bird from your home, especially if a low volatile latex paint is used. But, I think it is a very good idea since you have someone to watch the bird for you. It is not just the paint fumes that need to be considered, but any dust kicked up from the cleaning & preparation of the walls. This is really important if there is any possibility of lead based paint in the house. I would keep Rico out of your home for a full 3 days after the painting is done making sure the whole house is well ventilated. This might be a little overkill, but better safe than sorry. Also, make sure your friend knows exactly how to care for your bird, & that the room conditions are the same as in your home. Good luck & thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
