My dog has stomach pain, shivering after eating new food. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 10 months old | 12.1 lbs

Sugar has been acting like she has abdominal pain for 2 days now. She is eating, drinking, and pooping normally- except she is not as excited about food which isn’t normal for her. 3 days ago she ate her housemates dog food (pedigree). She has a very sensitive tummy and has been on 1 food her whole life because she gets severely sick eating anything else. She was shivering and panting yesterday, but now is just shivering and screams if I pick her up or even reach out for her.

I think it's probably time to visit your vet ASAP as it sounds like Sugar is definitely experiencing pain. If she is very sensitive to new foods, I would be concerned something such as pancreatitis is causing her severe pain (and may show other symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, etc), or other causes like stuck food, etc. Until you can get to your vet, keeping her comfortable and resting, and on her regular diet strictly (or bland foods of boiled chicken and rice) is best to limit any further GI upset until the cause can be found.
