Cat FISS: Should we scan for cancer spread before amputation?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Cat scheduled for leg amputation b/c of FISS. Should I get testing (MRI/CT) first to see if it has spread beyond limb? Maybe amputation is pointless?

Generally, staging is recommended following the diagnosis of a feline injection site sarcoma (FISS). After a biopsy sample confirms this diagnosis, you are correct in that an MRI or CT scan would be the next step prior to surgery. A CT scan can also help determine if there is metastasis (spread) of the cancer into the chest, although MRIs are more accurate in evaluating the tumor's invasiveness. If you haven't already consulted an oncologist, I'd recommend doing so before surgery. It's helpful to plan well before such a major surgery, as this planning can help to better establish your cat's prognosis and any follow-up treatment, such as radiation. I'm sorry that you and your furry friend are in this situation and wish you both all the best!
