My cat ate a Calcium & D3 supplement. Is 500 IU toxic? What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 2 years and 1 month old | 12.5 lbs

Our 12 lb. Domestic Shorthair may have ingested part of a Calcium & Vitamin D3 supplement. The softgel contained 600 mg of Calcium and 12.5 mcg (500 IU) of Vitamin D3. Would this be enough to be toxic to him? What should we do?

The dose of D3 ingested, 0.0125mg, will likely not pose a risk of serious toxicity. The dose of calcium is within published therapeutic ranges and should not cause a toxicity either. You can monitor for lethargy, increased thirst or urination and GI upset at home. Symptoms typically occur between 12 and 36 hours after ingestion. See your veterinarian if necessary.
