My kitten ate a mask string. Is peeing outside the litter box related?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 9 months and 12 days old

Three days ago, my 9-month-old kitten ate one of the straps from a face mask. Tonight he peed outside of the litter box while they were being cleaned. I don't recall him ever doing this before, though I may be wrong. Is this a coincidence or a result of the string that he ate? Thank you.

Hello, The signs of Berry having a problem relating to ingestion of a foreign object, like a mask strap, include vomiting, diarrhea, inappetence, or lethargy. Urinating outside of the litter box would probably be unrelated- especially if it was while you were cleaning the litter boxes. If he continues to urinate inappropriately, I'd recommend an exam from his vet to be sure he doesn't have any signs of bladder disease, which is unfortunately quite common in cats.
