My dog has ProHeart. How to prevent worms without monthly meds?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Pyrenees | Male | neutered | 10 months and 11 days old | 67 lbs

How do vets recommend protecting a dog against intestinal parasites (e.g., roundworms) if they have the ProHeart 6 injection so they do not need a monthly preventative like Heartguard or Interceptor? Is it better to just do more frequent fecal tests and deworm as needed?

You can submit a stool sample and deworm Miso every 3 months, or you can simply deworm him on the same schedule without submitting a stool sample. Discuss OTC and prescription dewormers with your veterinarian. Miso should still be on a flea and tick preventive as well.
