Tiny bumps on dog's head after boarding, not itching. What is it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Female | spayed | 4 years and 3 months old | 61 lbs

About two days ago my dog developed tiny bumps on the top of her head, they don’t bother her at all and she doesn’t try to itch them. I’m worried it may be a bite of some kind since she just came back from boarding. At first I wasn’t concerned because when her and my other dog play they get little bumps from biting and scratching each other which usually goes away within an hour or so, but these bumps haven’t gone away.

I can certainly see the bumps in question. Given the appearance of Cricket’s bumps, either insect bites or hives (typically from an allergic reaction) are the most likely culprits. Most dogs aren’t terribly itchy with insect bites, whereas hives tend to cause more itchiness. Since Cricket isn’t bothered by these bumps, try to simply give them a bit more time to resolve. If the lesions are still present in another 5-7 days, worsen, or begin to bother Cricket (itching, head rubbing, etc), then she should be examined by her vet to see if any diagnostic testing or medication is needed. I hope that everything goes well!
