My dog has a raspy cough. Is it serious? Should I see a vet?

My dog has recently developed a cough and I’d like to make sure he is okay. His behavior and appetite have not changed but he has a deep raspy cough/hack that he gets in fits. I want to know what if we should seek medical attention or if there are OTC treatments or home remedies.

I would seek medical attention. Without seeing Riggs in person, there is no way I can say if he's ok or not, nor can I say what is causing his cough. The way you describe the cough does sound concerning, so I do think it's best to get him checked out. I'd take him into the vet this week, give his vet a call in the morning to make him an appointment. Take him in asap if his behavior and/or appetite changes. I hope this helps.

Hello! Excellent job going ahead and scheduling a vet visit. While from what you describe does not sound urgent there are diseases that still require evaluation by a veterinarian and possibly diagnostics/treatment. One example is Kennel Cough. These dogs usually have a history of being around a lot of other dogs (e.g. dog parks, boarding facilities) and usually causes a dry, hacking cough. But other possible things like bronchitis, collapsing trachea, pneumonia, or heart issues require x-ray to diagnose. It sounds as though your pets attitude is good, he has good energy and is eating and drinking well! These are all good signs and reasons that I would not necessarily run to the emergency room. However, if you feel as though he is declining in any way between now and your appointment you should absolutely take him in sooner rather than later. Hopefully this information is helpful and your pet gets better soon!

Thank you for using Boop by Petco! Trigo is adorable! It is concerning that Trigo has lost his appetite. The coughing and sneezing, especially if accompanied by nasal discharge can be caused by an upper respiratory infection or even pneumonia. These conditions require a veterinary exam and potentially bloodwork and x-rays to diagnose and treat. I recommend having Trigo seen by a vet as soon as possible. He should be seen immediately if he is unresponsive or you believe he is having trouble breathing. I hope all is well!

My puppy (14 weeks) keeps sneezing and boogers keep coming out. There’s no cough and he doesn’t seem to be having a hard time breathing. Still pretty playful! Is there something I can give him to help? Should I visit a local vet?
It sounds like an upper respiratory infection. I would recommend having Riggs evaluated by a vet since he is so young. Sometimes these infections can be bacterial and quickly wiped out with antibiotics. Others could develop into coughing or pneumonia.

My one year old male dog has been dry heaving or coughing and seems to be struggling to keep his eyes open. He other wise is acting fine, but I’m worried. Should I take him in?
Poor guy. Coughing in pets should always be addressed by your vet, especially if it seems to be interferring with Opie's quality of life. He seems to be lethargic if he can't keep his eyes open. I wonder if the coughing is keeping him up at night and so he can't get enough rest? It is best to get this treated soon. A short course of antibiotics will likely be prescribed. Poor pup! There are lots of things that can cause coughing in dogs, so it's hard to say that the problem might be without being able to examine him. You're right that respiratory infections are quite common in dogs, and are the most common cause of coughing that I see in young dogs who are otherwise healthy - so this could very well be what is causing your dog to cough. Other possible causes of coughing would include allergies, bronchitis, or more serious issues like heart disease or lung tumors. If the coughing just started and your dog is acting normal otherwise, you could opt to wait until tomorrow morning to take him to the vet - your vet can listen to his heart and lungs to check for any problems, and will probably prescribe an antibiotic if an infection is suspected. If your dog is acting weak or lethargic or having any trouble breathing, it would be best to have him seen today by an emergency vet, as these can be signs of a more serious problem.

My dog has been “coughing,” mostly in the mornings for about a week or two. He seems completely fine otherwise, eating normally, normal bathroom patterns, normal energy. Is the cough something I should worry about?
This could be an upper respiratory infection such as kennel cough , but could also be a sign of heart disease, especially if Chico is an older dog. Another very likely possibility is that Chico has a collapsed trachea. You will need to take Chico to your vet for an exam and x-rays (which will rule out collapsed trachea and lung edema caused by congestive heart failure). Your vet;s exam will also detect any problems with the heart, that may be causing the cough. Please cschedule an appointment with your vet soon.

Cough can be caused by an infection, heart problem or lung condition, it is important to first know the cause before treating it as treatment is different from condition to another. The most common disease causing cough is a viral/bacterial infection called Kennel cough, this disease usually resolves without treatment within a couple weeks but if the cough is too severe it is recommended to go to the vet in order to get cough medicine and antibiotics.

Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Ralphie. Poor boy. Yes, this could be due to mild throat irritation. Give him plenty of water, and try using a humidifier or bringing her into the bathroom with the door closed while you take a hot shower - the steam and humidity may help to soothe his throat. I don't think you need to take him back into a vet now, I'd just keep an eye on him. I hope this helps!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your dog. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian. He may have an upper respiratory tract infection. In the meantime, encourage him to eat and drink as normal. Keep him home to allow his body to rest and away from other dogs as he may be contagious (no walks, dog parks, etc). Scruffy's cough could be due to a number of underlying conditions, including a collapsing trachea, chronic bronchitis, kennel cough (unlikely if he has not been near other dogs in the past 2 weeks), heartworm disease, heart disease, pneumonia, among others. Scruffy should go to the vet at this point, particularly since his cough is getting worse. The vet will perform an exam and may need to take chest x-rays to get to the bottom of this issue so that the best course of treatment can be started. I hope that all goes well!
