My cat has pancreatitis and won't eat. What food options are there?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 15 years and 4 months old | 7 lbs

My cat was diagnosed with pancreatitis. She is 15 and wasn't eating as much as she used to and has been losing weight (currently only 7 lbs, but she is small). Her ultrasound didn't show bowel or liver issues and no diabetes. We started b12 shots yesterday and they prescribed Royal Canin's Gastrointestinal food. Unfortunately, she won't eat the food. Can i give her something else? She can't afford to not eat. Should I ask for Mirataz?

Hello. I am so sorry for your worries with Maggie. There are other gastrointestinal diets for cats, like those made by Hill's & Purina that you can try. She may like a wet vs a dry diet, too. But the important thing is just to keep her eating. Cats tolerate dietary fats better than dogs, so while she recovers, you might even talk to your vet about introducing her to a hydrolyzed protein diet ( also used for pets with food sensitivities ) as this is highly digestible, too. As for asking about Mirataz, definitely do ask as this it can help as an antiemetic & appetite stimulant. I hope Maggie is feeling better soon & thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Poor Luna ! She is probably feeling still quite nauseous.. as it can take a few days for pancreatitis to improve. You can encourage her to eat by adding some tuna water to the low fat food, and warming it up a little, and offering it by hand. I would not leave food down for long periods of time, as it might get dry and even less palatable. If still not eating I would not leave her until tomorrow, I would have her checked over as she might need more time on the fluids and intravenous medications. Hope this helps !
