My new dog has no vaccine records. What should I do about shots?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 6 years and 7 months old | 6 lbs

I got my dog from someone but they never gave me a shot record. What should I do? Just take him to the vet anyway or what? Also,if I do take him and tell the vet this, what will they do? Give him the shots anyway or what?

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Great question! Yes, you need to take Dandy to a vet and let them know that you just got him but did not receive any vaccine records. . They will get him started on his vaccines and likely give him a deworming. They will talk to you about what else he may need like heart worm prevention, flea/tick prevention, etc depending on what is prevalent in your area. It is best to get him established with a vet anyway in case of any problems that may arise or emergency situations. Hope this helps. Best wishes!
