My hamster broke her leg. Can I give her pain meds before the vet?

Unfortunately nothing, there are no safe OTC pain medications for hamsters. A broken leg is a medical emergency and you should take Wynter into a vet immediately. Please do not wait to do it, as it would cause her suffering, take her to an ER vet now. Best of luck.

I'm sorry to hear this is happening to Carol. Unfortunately, you will not be able to find anything over the counter that is safe to give a hamster. I would be worried at 2 years old that she has developed a tumor in the spinal cord or some other serious injury. I think a vet visit would be your best option. The doctor can give you an honest opinion as to her condition. I hope this helps. Please post any additional questions you may have.

You can't cure this at home, he has to see a vet now. I would see if you can borrow money from family and friends to afford a vet, and if your vet will take payment plans. Please take him into a vet immediately.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. Since Chompie is not using her hind leg and if you believe it may be broken, I recommend having her seen by a veterinarian. Hamsters often hide any signs of pain since they are prey species. Your veterinarian will be able to closely examine Chompie and may recommend x-rays to look for evidence of a fracture. Other possible causes include neurologic diseases that are making the leg nonfunctional. Your veterinarian may recommend splinting the leg if it is fractured, or may recommend pain medications if indicated. I hope this is helpful!

Thanks for reaching out about Amber. A sprain or strain should heal well with some cage rest, but a fracture or other injury is better managed through a veterinary visit. If you have a chance to handle Amber, try touching the leg to determine how painful it it. Even a sprain could respond better with analgesic medications. Good luck.

U have noticed that my hamster is limping slightly, and I noticed that a bone is starting to stick out of her left foot. I'm not allowed to go to the vet, so why should I do?
I am sorry to hear about your hamster. It is difficult to see what is going on in the pictures due to her very small size. I am making an assumption that you are a child and this is why you say you can't go to the vet? If so, you need to let an adult know about your hamster's problem. Unfortunately it sounds like your hamster has wounded it's leg and possibly even has a fracture. It sounds like she is in pain. They vet may try splinting her leg or may recommend amputation. They may also be able to prescribe pain medication for her. If her leg is not fixable then humane euthanasia (putting her to sleep) may be the kindest option for her, as it sounds like she is suffering and no animal should have to live in pain.

This definitely needs to be checked out by a vet. This isn't normal, and she is likely in pain from the fall. There are no OTC pain medications you can give, and leaving her in pain would be cruel to her. Please take her into a vet immediately.

Poor Oscar! There is a good chance he could have broken that leg. I would strongly recommend have your vet take a look at it. Your vet can take X-rays to see if it is broken. Your vet can also start him on an anti-inflammatory pain medicine to help him feel better. Good job with take the wheel out because he definitely needs to rest. I would also take out anything else he can climb on or climb up. I hope this helps and he starts to feel better soon.

Sorry to hear about Flash. If you believe his leg might be fractures, you should probably be seen by a veterinarian, as broken legs or back can be very painful and possibly life threatening. I would remove the wheel for now in hopes of preventing further damage to the leg/back.

Unfortunately there are no safe over the counter medications for pain available. All the ones you could buy for humans would be life-threatening. You should really take your kitten to an emergency vet or Pet ER today for pain relief and proper diagnosis and stabilisation of the fractures. If you cannot do this , put her in a small box with soft bedding, and make sure she eats and drinks. If she does not eat or drink or is in a lot of pain you must take her to a vet today. While kittens can heal well and fast, they can also die fast, and broken legs do cause bleeding into the muscle which can actually cause a kitten to ebcome very anemic as well, and therefore weak.

Ouch, poor Tyson! From your description, I share your concern - this sounds like a potentially very serious injury and a fractured bone is definitely a worry if he's dragging his foot. Tyson needs to be seen by a vet, to determine the extent of his injury and get him treated accordingly. He may need to be sedated to have that laceration closed if it is deep, and the vet can discuss options if there is a break. The vet will be able to start him on pain meds, and likely will start antibiotics as well since bite wounds are very prone to infection. In the meantime, keep them separate, and keep Tyson confined in a small cage somewhere dark and quiet to minimize stress. I hope this helps and he feels better soon!
