Why does my dog have red spots and yellow discharge on his groin?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 2 years and 4 months old | 185 lbs

My 2 year old black male has red spots, like a rash, and some yellow puss around his groin area. We live in the fingerlakes region of New York and he frequently runs through the country fields. What could this be? Should I take him to the vet or is there some home remedy? He does not appear to be in pain or act any differently. Thank you, chiara

Hi there and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Thank you for sending the picture- I see some redness and yellow discharge there which does indicate an infection. This could be due to irritation from an allergy such as a flea allergy or a contact allergy from brushing up against something outside as you described. I would recommend getting Higgins on a flea preventative if you don't have him on one now. You can also try an antimicrobial wipe or spray such as the Douxo S3 Pyho which can help but I would recommend seeing your vet for a closer inspection if it worsens or doesn't improve.
