What causes excessive drooling in older dogs? Should I see a vet?

This drooling could be due to nausea, anxiety, pain, or a dental problem. I see that Eve is over 9 years old and dental problems are common in senior dogs. I'd be concerned she has a dental problem causing this drooling. Unfortunately without seeing her in person, I can't say for certain what is causing this drooling. I recommend taking her into a vet this weekend to get this diagnosed and treated. I hope this helps!

Excessive drooling can be a sign of nausea, eating something toxic or bitter, tooth problem (such as infection), or a salivary duct blockage, among other things. If the excessive drooling continues, Scoopy should be seen by a vet to determine what's causing the drooling. However, if it has already resolved then you can simply monitor Scoopy for any further symptoms.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Drooling is often a sign of nausea. This may be transient and may resolve on its own. However, if this progresses to vomiting, an evaluation by a veterinarian would be recommended as vomiting can be observed with conditions such as gastroenteritis, pancreatitis, dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. my dog seems to drool more excessively lately. Is this a problem? She is a Lab/English Pointer cross and is 9 yrs old.and very healthy.
Increased drooling alone (no vomiting or loss of appetite) is probably nothing to worry about but can uncommonly signal a tooth or mouth problem or a problem with the facial muscles. If it’s one sided, there are other signs, or it seems excessive, see your vet. Best of luck to you and Daisy!

My dog is drooling, A LOT. So much that it has kept her up pretty much all night. She is leaving huge wet spots wherever she lays her head. It is unusual for her to drool like this.
Drooling can be caused by a lot of things, and Penny will need to be examined by a vet to determine what could be going on. Nausea is the most common cause, followed by oral pain. Dogs with hypersalivation should have a thorough medical history discussion and physical exam. Physical exam will evaluate all of the oral structures, and the vet may need to sedate for a more thorough oral exam.

Excessive drooling in dogs can be due to nausea, bloat, dental problems, poisonous plants, or heat stroke. Whether this is bad or not depends on the presence of other signs, such as vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, excessive panting, or behavior out of the ordinary. If Bugsy is simply excessively drooling, he could be feeling nauseous or may have a dental problem, but if there are other symptoms, then it is likely something more serious. If there are any of the symptoms I mentioned above or his behavior is different from the normal, I would take him into a vet now. If he's just drooling, I would monitor him. Should the drooling continue for hours or additional symptoms develop, I would take him into the vet.

Excessive drooling can be caused by mouth problem (bad teeth, abscesses, wounds, blisters on the gums), stomach diseases (excessive acid production, reflux), infections, pain, nausea and more. Please, take Daisy to your local vets for an appointment. Excessive drooling should be always investigated and treated as required. Your vet may recommend some blood work or x-ray to find out what the is the problem. Good luck :)

Drooling can be a sign of nausea and this with a decreased activity level can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Rufus evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and others depending on the findings on exam. Dogs temperament is fine but drool dripping from left side of mouth. Does not seem in pain and will let you open and close mouth. Do we need to take her to a 24 hour vet?
Poor Lola. Unless she is foaming at the mouth, there is excessive drool from her mouth, vomiting, refusing to eat, or acting abnormal then I would watch her closely. If the drool is continuing tomorrow or becomes excessive, then I would consider taking her to your emergency vet. Drooling can be a sign of toxin ingestion but they usually are drilling excessively and it isn’t just from one side of the mouth. She could be drooling due to nausea, a tooth problem, oral ulcers, tumors in the mouth and much more. Your vet will be able to help determine the cause if she continues. I hope this helps.

It sounds like to me that Charlie may have severe dental problems causing this excessive drooling and not wanting to eat. He could also have a GI illness causing his symptoms. I would take Charlie into a vet first thing in the morning for an exam.
