Is clear fluid around my dog's anus after pooping normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 8 years and 6 months old | 12 lbs

My dog Romeo pooped and his bottom had little bit of clear fluid around the anus. Do anal glands release fluid when dogs poop? Should I be concerned? His anal glands are ok. They were recently checked by his vet tech

Hi and thanks for your request. Certainly anal glands physiologically release some fluid when dogs defecate. Usually if the fluid is of small quantity and defecation is normal, there is nothing to be worried about. Clear fluid is normal.
