My dog has skin scabs and a history of MCT. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 3 years and 7 months old | 85 lbs

My dog has developed skin scabs; I would like an opinion on if I should take him in to get these examined asap. He's an Am Bulldog mix, 3yo, 80lb, neutered. He had a MCT removed ~8mo ago. Larger black scab: 4mm, on jaw. First noticed 5mo ago, no changes. Smaller black scab: 2mm, on snout. First noticed 2mo ago, no changes. Red scab: 4mm, on knee. Appeared 4d ago, no changes. They are all raised but don't seem to bother him. He gets Cytopoint shots every so often for allergies.

Mast cell tumors are known as "the great pretender" because they can look like just about any type of skin lesion. Knowing Bodhi's history of having a MCT, I would approach him with a bit more caution than another 3 year old dog. The lesions in question don't look like the typical pustule or papule that I'd expect to see with itching and allergies. I'm glad to hear that he isn't bothered by these lesions, but the only definitive way to determine their cause is by taking a sample of cells with a needle (or removing them for a biopsy) for microscopic analysis. While this certainly isn't an emergency situation, I do think you should take Bodhi in for an exam in the next week or so. I hope that everything goes well!
