Dog scratching ears and licking paws: Is it allergies or an infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 10 months old | 33 lbs

My dog has been scratching at his ears from behind and in the ear. There is no smell or discharge. He has been licking his paws a lot. He's been wearing also not sure if that's just his breed. He's half pug. Today I noticed when I touched him by his armpit the corner of his mouth comes up like an smile. He's active and eating well. I started giving him wet dog food about two months ago.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Scratching ears is usually a sign of ear canal infection or an allergy. Also, excessive licking of the paws suggest skin problem or an allergy. A visit at your local vets is recommended as Carl may need a course of ear drops and / or anti-allergic medication.
