My cat limping with shredded nails after going outside. What happened?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | British Shorthair | Male | neutered | 1 year and 2 months old | 11 lbs

Hi, Our cat called Owen is 1 years old and recently started going outside. He popped out for 10 minutes and we found him hiding in the corner, then noticed he was limping. He appears to have a problem with nails shredded on both back legs. Photo attached. There are more cats in the area so a fight is possible. He had 3 wet food pouches a day and grazes dry biscuits. I can send more photos of required. We'll take him to the vets as soon as they open but sooner advice appreciated, regards, matt

Shredded nails and limping are often signs of trauma. Owen could have been hit by a car, fallen, gotten into a fight with another animal, etc. I would certainly bring him indoors and confine him there. Assess him for external wounds and have him seen by a veterinarian asap.
