Why does my dog have a wheezy bark when he sprints? Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I have a year-old ACD. Occasionally ally when he sprints he has a wheezy bark that sounds a lot like kennel cough, but it’s doesn’t happen all the time as if he’s got a cold. Is this normal?

This is not normal, especially for a young, athletic dog. I would recommend he be evaluated by a veterinarian and potentially have chest radiographs performed. Wheezing and a cough can be caused by upper/lower airway diseases or even heart disease so it is important to rule those problems out.
