My dog has hard poop. Will Lactulose or wet food help soften it?

Hello. My 8 year old Shih Tzu is pooping but his stool is really firm and kinda hard. The vet is aware of the issue & gave Lactulose for future use as needed. Would Lactulose help? Should I feed him only wet food for a day or two? I don’t want him to be in pain. He’s not crying or anything. He is eating good and drinking water. Thank you.
