Cat's nail has dried blood, new nail stuck. Can I fix it at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | 1 year and 4 months old | 3 lbs

Hello, We noticed that one of my cats nail had dried up blood built on it while a new nail was coming under so the old nail was attached to the new nail, as it dried on it due to the blood. I cut half of it and i managed to cut half of the old nail and removed some dried up blood but most of the dried up blood remained. The new nail is still stuck with the dried up blood and I can’t afford to take my cat, named Simba to the vet. Could you please tell me what i could do?

Hi and thanks for your request. The area can be clean to remove the dried blood with some salt water solution and then the new nail can be left growing by itself. Licking should be discouraged by applying a buster collar. The new nail should not have particular problems growing and eventually will displace the old one. From the pic I can see where you cut it, and it seems fine.
