My old dog struggles to stand and seems in pain. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My pug is about 13 years old. Lately, she seems fine most of the time but sometimes she'll struggle to stand up or be reluctant to stand or jump up or off a couch and seems in pain - she shakes and is hunched when she walks. When I picked her up during this phase she yelped but I couldn't tell where the pain was. But this seems to last only a short time, once or twice a day and then she's fine again - walking around normally, I can pick her up and she doesn't yelp. What could be causing this?

The most likely cause for your dog's pain would be arthritis based on her age and the description of the problem you provided. Arthritis is an extremely common condition in dogs. I suggest you take her to your vet for an exam. There are definitely good medications that can be used to make her feel better.
