My kitten's tail is swollen and fluid-filled after car accident?

My 4 month old kitten was hit by a car a little over a week ago. The back tire clipped his tail/butt area but didn’t break any bones. There’s a lot of swelling and we have given him anti inflammatory medication which helped a lot. Over the past two days we’ve noticed he’s retaining a lot of fluid in his injured area. He has retained so much fluid that if you pay his butt, it jiggles like a water balloon. What can i do to drain it or treat it?

Do not attempt to drain this yourself. Felix needs to see a vet immediately to get this checked out. It could be fluid accumulating, but he could have an infection or that could be internal bleeding. I can't say what exactly is causing the swelling without seeing him in person, but I would consider this a medical emergency. Please take him into a vet now. Best of luck.

Hi there. Thank you for using Boop by Petco. It sounds like Felix has an abscess on his tail. it is very common for them to get this from the bite of another cat. The loss of appetite is usually due to a fever from the infection. The other possibility would be a fracture in the tail. Either way, he needs to see a vet for treatment. This appears to be a classic presentation of a tail-pull injury. This happens when the tail gets pulled very forcefully (either it gets stuck under something like a car tire, or gets pulled by someone). This causes significant damage to the major nerves at the base of the tail, which is very painful and can cause paralysis of the tail. This requires that you take Kovu to a vet as soon as possible. It's not an emergency, but best if you go to a vet within 24 hours, because he will need pain medication and possibly other treatment. Your vet will be able to give you a better idea about the severity of the injury and prognosis. I hope that helps and Kovu gets better soon.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Rilian. He will need to see his veterinarian as he most likely has developed an abscess under his skin. Cat teeth are very sharp and puncture the skin introducing bacteria deep inside. The overlying skin heals quickly trapping the infection underneath. A visible swelling will develop. This is what I suspect has happened to Rilian. Most cats will develop a fever and may stop eating. He will likely need antibiotics and possibly to have the abscess lanced. In the meantime, it is fine to shave the overlying hair. I would not apply anything topically aside from water to cleanse the wound though. You can apply warm compresses for 5 minutes 3 times per day if he will tolerate it as well. I hope this information helps!

If Elton isn't fixed, I suspect he's fighting with other male cats over females, and bites from other cats frequently become abscessed. Keep him indoors tonight and in the morning, and take him into the vet in the morning to get this treated. Best of luck.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Mangle. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian. He may have an abscess from a fight wound if you noticed the bump after he was outside. The veterinarian will perform an exam and take his temperature. An fever can be a sign of an infection. Then a small needle may be used to collect a sample of cells to evaluate under the microscope. If it is an infection, there will be white blood cells and bacteria present. From there, treatment options can be discussed. I hope this information helps!

This poor kitten needs to see a vet immediately. If his tail is hanging by a thread, this is extremely painful and there are no pain medications you can give him. Many human pain medications are toxic to cats, and are fatal if given. He may also have a severe eye infection, which also needs to be treated by a vet. Leaving an eye infection untreated can lead to vision loss. I would consider this a medical emergency. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. Mano should be examined by a veterinarian. Cat bites can quickly become infected which will require antibiotics for treatment. The puncture in her abdomen should be examined to make sure it did not puncture the abdominal wall. This would be a serious situation. The swelling near her tail could be a developing abscess. You can share pictures if you request a consultation, but Mano would be better served by a physical exam followed up with the appropriate veterinary treatments.

Would you happen to know if my cats tail is broken and needs to go to the emergency room asap or just keep an eye on it and apply Neosporin to the wound. My cat got his tail stick in the door when I was closing it and it scraped his fur off the tip.
Unfortunately, it's not possible to tell is his tail is broken from these pictures. I would have to examine the tail in-person in order to tell this. The wound does look quite deep though and it's definitely possible that it was broken. These injuries tend to be vary painful, so I would consider going to the ER vet if he seems very guarded and not interested in food - these are signs of severe pain. Otherwise, as long as it's not bleeding profusely, this injury can wait until your regular vet is open tomorrow. For now, you should flush the wound using a syringe or other dispensing device with warm water for five minutes. This may not be easy, because cats tend to hate water getting sprayed on them. I recommend having someone help you with this and wrapping Alexander in a towel to make sure the wound gets flushed well.
