My dog ate esomeprazole. Is it an emergency or can I wait for the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 3 months and 23 days old | 50 lbs

My dog chew up a bottle of esomeprazole magnesium (brand Kirkland) and we are unsure about how much he ate (if any) and we are wondering if we should be worried? Should we give him something to help pass it? We go to the vet tomorrow for a checkup, is it safe to wait or should this be an emergency?

Hello! Fortunately that is a very safe medication that we even use in dogs. It can cause some vomiting and diarrhea that usually goes away on its own. Watch closely for signs of dehydration if vomiting occurs and if there are any significant behavior changes that concern you, than a vet visit would be warranted.
