My old dog screamed and convulsed; blood work is normal. What now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 13 years and 3 months old | 4.5 lbs

My dog had an episode in the middle of the night. He fell to the side screaming so loud with his limbs stiff and eyes and mouth open, tongue out. He let out 2-3 extremely loud screams and then convulsed a few seconds before he came-to. He was very tired and slept a lot. The vets here are not giving me any answers they said the blood work is normal. He is a 13 year old yorkie named Manolo. This morning he is eating well and is back to normal. Please help me understand so I can better care for him

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It sounds that Manolo had an epileptic fit, which is not uncommon in older dogs. If the blood work came back normal and Manolo is back to normal, you need to monitor him at home for now. You should avoid excitement, excessive exercises, stress, loud noise, sharp light. If Manolo has another episode like this, your vet will likely prescribe anti-epileptic medication for him.
