My dog's neuter incision is red and he's licking it. Is it infected?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 12 lbs

Hi there. My dog was neutered about a month and a half ago and his empty scrotum (not sure what it is now called) is red. Do you know what this could be ? I have attached a photo and he does seem to be trying to lick it.

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking (if any). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem if the redness does not improve in the next 4 days.

Frido may have some contact dermatitis being a small dog and low to the ground. You could give him a bath with a gentle oatmeal shampoo and see if that helps the redness. A small amount of discharge from the sheath of a male dog can be normal but if he seems irritated, strains to urinate, licks a lot then I would have him checked by his vet. Grass or other irritants can sometimes get in the prepuce causing irritation or infection.
