Why is my dog restless on Rimadyl, given his medication sensitivity?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Male | neutered | 70 lbs

My dog injured his paw pads and was prescribed Rimadyl. He had this once before and I thought he tolerated it. This time around he’s been ok for the first couple of days, but today is pacing and very restless. It’s been a week since injury so I thought he was doing better pain wise. He has the MDR1 gene mutation and just seems to be very sensitive to medications. He hasn’t been able to rest or lay down for a few hours. He is eating normally, drinking, and went on a short walk.

If he is still taking the Rimadyl I would stop giving it and call your vet as soon as they are open. He probably should got back to your vet for a follow-up. It may not be related to the Rimadyl at all but it is better to be safe than sorry. Even though he is eating and drinking, that much pacing and restlessness is not normal.
