My cat's creatinine dropped but BUN is high. Is it still CRF?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 17 years and 5 months old | 2.6 lbs

My cat stopped eating 6 days ago.Took her on 27th & they did blood tests. Her Creatinine was 3.3 & I was told she had CRF.They didn't check BUN.She was still not eating after coming home.So went back next day & she had enema as we felt she was constipated. She pooped at 11 pm that night. On 30th we did another blood test. Her TBIL was 1.6 mg/DL.Creatinine was <1.6. BUN 93. Can it still be CRF?Can creatinine reduce from 3.3 to <1.6 in 2 days in CRF? s it hemolytic anemia? Worried sick. Please help.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Creatinine level of 3.3mg/dL does suggest CRF. If Patch was on iv fluids treatment recently (between these two blood tests), it is possible for CREA level to go down to normal. However, if Patch did not receive any iv fluids, I would suspect one of the reading was incorrect and should be repeated. High BUN suggest kidney disease as well, but it could also be due to dehydration, gastrointestinal bleed, recent feeding and more. Elevated TBIL is also a concern as it could be a sign of liver / gall bladder / bile duct disease. Less commonly, it is due to hemolytic anemia (in that case Patch would have evidence of anemia). Please, get in touch with your local vets as ideally, the blood test should be repeated and should include hematology.
