My dog gained weight. Should I change his Zyrtec allergy dose?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bullmastiff | Male | neutered | 150 lbs

My dog has taken Citirizine (Zyrtec) for skin itchiness in pas and face in the past for non seasonal allergies. He was about 100 pounds. Now he is 150 pounds. Does the dose stay at 20 mg? Is that still effective at 150 pounds?

Hello, The answer to this is: maybe! Cetirizine anecdotally in very large dogs is sometimes still effective at a 20mg per day dosage, but some dogs will need up to a 1 mg/kg dose for relief. At Goose's weight, this would be three 20mg tablets. I'd suggest trying one 20mg tab per day at first, and going to three tabs per day if needed. I hope this helps.
